Focus Screenplay Review (SPOILER ALERT)

Genre: Romantic Con-edy
Premise: A con man teams up with a con woman, but when he falls for her, he must decide which is more important, her or the con.
About: This is the directing team behind “Crazy Stupid Love.” They used to be purely writers but look to now be focusing on their directing careers. “Focus” is their latest writing/directing project. Word on the street is that Ryan Gossling and Emma Stone will star.

I don’t usually review first drafts anymore. But a lot of people have written to tell me that this script is really good, so I’m going to make an exception. As for this writing/directing team, I’m not sure what to make of them yet. I think they wrote and directed “I Love You, Phillip Morris,” which, while not something I’d ever want to see, was at least different. And recently, they took on directing duties for one of my favorite scripts, “Crazy, Stupid Love,” and played it a little too mainstream in my opinion. Something was lost in that translation. The story didn’t move as fast as it did in the script.

Still, comedies are tricky to direct and when you have another element to latch onto, like the con, it makes things a lot easier, since the entire movie doesn’t need to rest on laughs.

33 year-old Nicky Spurgeon comes from a long line of con men. His dad was a con man. His grandfather was a con man. In fact, his grandfather and father used to con each other! And that’s made Nicky about as untrustworthy of others as one can get. Gotta love those troubled backstories. They make your characters so damn interesting.

Anyway, Nicky’s hanging out in a bar one day where he meets a hot girl who takes him back to her room. Just before they’re about to do the Dew, the woman’s husband barges in with a gun, threatening to kill Nicky. But for some reason, Nicky’s not phased. He shrugs his shoulders and tells the hubby to fire away.

The couple is shocked when Nicky then reveals he’s been onto their con for an hour now. Pissed but intrigued, the girl, Jess, follows him out and begs him to teach her what he knows. But since Nicky doesn’t let anybody in – doesn’t trust a soul – he tells her to get lost.

Jess is one persistent little cookie, though, and eventually convinces him to take her on. He quickly shows her all his tricks, then brings her onto his big con, which will take place at the Super Bowl. After a few twists and turns, he nails the rather confusing Super Bowl con with Jess’ help.

But whereas Jess thinks they’re now a team (and possibly more), Nicky’s always thought of her as a means to an end. Now that the con is over, so is she. Just like that, he disappears, and Jess is devastated.

But three years later, she and Nicky cross paths again before a huge car race. Turns out Nicky is pulling a big con there, and Jess happens to be with one of the drivers, having left the con world behind. Nicky finds himself drawn to Jess once again, but this time she’s not having it, stonewalling him at every turn. Eventually she relents though, and Nicky is posed, once again, with that question: Does he give himself to this woman, or is it still all about the con?

I have a question about con man movies. Why is it that our con man always randomly gets hit up by another con man (in this case, Jess)? I mean, what are the chances? It’s not like every third person in the world is a con man, right? So the odds are pretty astronomical that someone would try to con a conner. Yet it ALWAYS happens. I don’t know. That’s just never made sense to me.

Anyway, my big thing with Con scripts is that they have to be CLEVER. Every scene, every character, every con, every double cross – has to be cleverly executed. If we can see it from a mile away? If at the end of the con, we don’t experience that internal, “Oooooohhhh?” then you’re not doing your job.

To me, that “ooooohhh” never happened in Focus. I wouldn’t say any of the cons here were bad. But none of them blew me away either. The best con is one in which we’re actually unaware a con is going on – so I don’t know if it counts.

Luckily, it’s a GREAT scene that almost single-handedly saves the draft. Nicky, who has a major gambling problem, starts to lose control while betting against a very rich Asian man at the Super Bowl. They bet on miniscule things like who’ll make the next first down or whether the quarterback will hand off or throw. Nicky keeps losing, but each time, betting double or nothing, until a 100 dollar bet turns into a million dollar bet. It’s one of the more intense scenes I’ve read in awhile and has you gripping your seat, desperate to see how it will end.

Unfortunately, after that sequence, we experience an awkward three-year time jump and are introduced to an unnatural storyline involving Nicky trying to con a bunch of race car drivers. The first draft-ness definitely affected this section (the writers feel like they’re still exploring the idea) but even considering its rawness, it doesn’t feel right. I mean, race cars haven’t even been mentioned in the script before this.

I also hate large time jumps late in scripts because they imply nothing in the story is immediate. If we can jump forward 3 years and nothing is affected, then the story probably isn’t focused enough (no pun intended). I’m not saying it can’t or hasn’t been done before, of course. Just that it’s difficult.

Focus has potential. Nicky is an interesting character. And the love story with Jess is pretty solid (and will only get better with more drafts). But I’m not sure either of the script’s halves currently work. The Super Bowl half is plagued by us not knowing what Nicky’s plan is. And the Race Car half just feels out of place. Will be interesting to see what further drafts give us.

What I learned: You want your characters to be fucked up in some way. Somewhere in that brain of theirs, wires need to be crossed. The more wires that are crossed, the more interesting the character tends to be. Here, Nicky comes from a family where his father played his own father in a con, accidentally killing him in the process. How can you trust anyone when you grew up in a family that couldn’t even trust each other? This lack of trust is what makes Nicky’s relationship with Jess so interesting. He doesn’t know whether to give in to her or play her. That script-long tug-of-war is the emotional meat of this piece and while it’s bogged down by too much first-draftness, I see it working well once the story’s been slimmed down.

riporto alcune cose interessanti ,senza tradurre tutto perchè non mi volevo spoilerare più di tanto e anche perchè verrà riscritto il tutto .

-il team che c'è dietro è quello del film “Crazy Stupid Love.” qui infatti riportano che anche per questo film gli attori accreditati dovevano essere Emma stone e Ryan Gossing. ED IN EFFETTI tempo fa fu paparazzato un incontro di lavoro tra ben e emma stone che è durato un bel pò di tempo.sicuramente il provino o lettura del personaggio.a quanto pare la nostra kristen ha battuto le concorrenti e si è accapparata il ruolo .

-lo script iniziale ha ricevuto molti apprezzamenti tanto da indurre questo 'critico'a leggere la prima bozza .

- i personaggi sono molto intriganti soprattutto per il loro vissuto.Nick il protagonista infatti deriva da una famiglia di truffatori...per generazioni.come puoi fidarti del prossimo se hai imparato a diffidare della tua stessa famiglia?ed è su questa base di diffidenza che si costruisce il rapporto con Jess ,la protagonista femminile.
- il rapporto tra jess e nick si basa su un tiro alla fune emozionale..se lui è veramente interessato a lei o la sta usando solo per i suoi scopi.lui non sa se cedere o solo giocare con questa donna.
- quello che a suo avviso non va bene è un salto temporale di tre anni dal primo dei due.

a me non è sembrato..
critica il salto temporale e le scene del Super Bowl ma nulla di così disfattista o che non si possa rivedere nella stesura finale dello scrip e che appunto verrà fatta.
poi ognuno ha il suo traduttore

se qualcuno ha mai fatto passare il messaggio che la prima bozza di uno scrip è perfetta...vi ha preso per i fondellli

Affleck falls out of 'Focus'

With an increasingly busy schedule, Ben Affleck has fallen out of Warner Bros.' "Focus."
Sources close to Affleck tell Variety that while the actor very much wanted to do the film, the timing just couldn't be worked out.

The pic also stars Kristen Stewart, with "Crazy Stupid Love" helmers Glenn Ficarra and John Requa directing from their own script.

Story follows a veteran grifter who partners with a girl who's new to the life.

Affleck is focused on writing, directing, producing and staring in "Live by Night" and is also in development on "The Stand" and the untitled Whitey Bulger project. Add in all the award-season promoting he's been doing for "Argo," and insiders said an April start date on "Focus" just didn't look possible for Affleck.

Warners will now look for someone who can step in order to meet that spring start.

The WME-repped Affleck is taking a break from the biz today as he is in D.C. testifying before the House Armed Services Committee to provide an "update on the evolving security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo and implications for U.S. national security."

a me sta rodendo moooooltissimo e non per Ben Affleck ma per le reazioni che mi dovevo aspettare.ma che probabilmente Non tollero più. forse dovrei veramente smettere di seguire la coppia i fan e compagnia bella. e ridurre il tutto ad andare a vedere i film Quando escono in Italia ,se sono di mio gradimento.

chi le va contro a prescindere prima ha sputato veleno dicendo schifezze sul matrimonio di questo attore insinuando chissà quale ipotetica futura liason con kristen,poi dopo se ne escono dicendo che lui non fa più il film a causa sua.
ma lui era stato scelto prima ancora di lei,quindi se il problema era kristen NON L'AVREBBERO PRESA IN PARTENZA.avrebbero fatto fuori lei piuttosto che perdere Ben affleck .ma vallo a spiegare a queste decelebrate!

mi ha scassato i maroni questo doppio standard tra i due.quando lei lavorava a londra a Biancaneve, si sono trovate le scuse più disparate per giustificare il fatto che lui stranamente non andasse ,pur non lavorando,proprio a londra...la sua terra madre...dal dover tenere il cane (che stava invece con il padre di lei)al dover tenere la casa..magari areare le stanze...

ci sono quelle che sono felici che lei non lavori perchè altrimenti esce del gossip !ma perchè allora robert non dovrebbe lavorare nemmeno lui visto che esce del gossip su tutte le sue co-protagoniste ,anche se sono sposate o lesbiche o con l'età di sua zia ?

dimenicando che se lui ha scelto lei e non una che fa la cassaintegrata ,saprà bene a cosa va in contro.e facendo finta che ,se si dovessero lasciare ,lui non si fidanzerà con una di victoria secret o con un'altra attrice ma con una che sta a casa a pulire e tenere i gatti.

ultimo argomento. natale e capodanno. pensavo che la gente si gestisse le proprie vacanze invece NO. hanno già deciso,sempre i fan della coppia, come devono andare le vacanze di questi due.se saranno separate ovviamente è giusto che robert sia a londra e che quindi vada via da LA per stare con la famiglia ...PERO' se lei invece lo passa con la sua famiglia non va bene,lei DEVE andare dove va lui .c'è una contraddizione di fondo o no?famiglie di serie A e serie B a questo punto!

non riesco più a vedere la differenza tra queste fan e quelle che odiano kristen. e la cosa è grave,perchè non è più divertente seguire la coppia...non c'è ninete più di "bello" è tutto visto con malizia o peggio non si può avere niente di bello perchè viene 'sporcato'con teorie strampalate,gelosie ,insicurezze...

Ben Affleck parla di Focus ai micorfoni di mtv


“Basically I’m doing this movie called “Live By Night” and I’m trying to meet this schedule… so that I can have it released at the right time,” he explained at the event where he picked up a Special Achievement in Filmmaking award for “Argo.” “And basically I haven’t gotten enough writing done; it became clear that if I took that job — it was in Buenos Aires for three months — I’d have to miss the deadline. I had to choose between getting the movie out when I wanted to or doing that movie. Reluctantly I chose the latter but I love those guys, I love Kristen. I was really excited to work with her. I think the movie is going to be fabulous. I’m sure they’ll find a great guy for it.”



“Focus” is the story of a seasoned con man (formerly to be played by Affleck) who takes on an up-and-comer (Stewart) to teach her the ways of a good grift. Writer/director duo Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (“Crazy, Stupid, Love”) will write the script and direct the film.

The search for Affleck’s replacement continues before filming begins in April.

quindi a parte gli altri impegni di Ben dei quali ORA non me ne può più fregà di meno ,è venuto fuori che le riprese di Focus saranno anche a Buenos Aires.

chissà chi potrebbe sostituire Ben!!?!non riesco a farmi venire in mente un nome....!mi è rimasto il pallino di Viggo anche se ovviamente non è minimamente fattibile
